What is a warrant canary, and does it matter?

A warrant canary is a public notice a provider keeps up while it has not received a secret legal demand it is not allowed to confirm. The signal is when that notice disappears or stops being renewed. Methodology adds 3 privacy points for a canary. The points are additive. They do not replace an audit. vpn-comparison-2026.json sets warrant_canary true only on NordVPN. Every other provider omits the key. The file stores no canary date. Last verified 24 September 2026.

People treat a canary as proof the provider keeps no logs. It is a narrower object. It is a statement about secret process, updated often enough that silence means something. Methodology lists it with RAM-only servers, cryptocurrency payment, and an open-source client: extra privacy features, not substitutes for jurisdiction or a no-logs audit.

The machine-readable file is stricter than the methodology examples. NordVPN has warrant_canary true, ram_servers true, and accepts_crypto true on the same object. Privacy is 94, audit firm Deloitte, jurisdiction Panama, composite 91. Proton VPN’s methodology sketch of a 98 mentions a canary, and Proton’s privacy score is 98, but the JSON key is absent on that row. This page will not promote a missing key into a yes. Absence here means the dataset did not record a canary. It does not prove the provider’s own site lacks one.

When the three points matter

Privacy is 25 percent of the composite. A canary is +3 inside that category, beside larger inputs: the Eyes penalty, the no-logs claim, and the audit band. NordVPN can hold Deloitte and a canary flag at the same time. Mullvad can hold Cure53 and privacy 95 with the canary key unset. The flag does not reorder those facts.

A canary only works if someone checks that it is still current. This file has no canary date and no “still current” field. Read the provider’s own notice, then re-check the JSON before treating the flag as live. A dropped tunnel on public Wi-Fi is a different control, scored under Security.

FAQ

What is a warrant canary?

A standing public statement that a secret legal demand has not arrived. The useful signal is when the statement stops. Methodology scores a canary at +3 inside Privacy. It does not replace an audit.

Which providers does the comparison file flag?

Only NordVPN, with warrant_canary true. Every other provider omits the key, including Proton VPN and Mullvad. Omission is not a finding that their website lacks a canary.

Does a canary prove a no-logs policy?

No. A canary is a process notice. A no-logs claim is about what the provider stores, scored with jurisdiction and audit_type. NordVPN also has audit_firm Deloitte. The canary flag does not change audit_type.
