NordVPN vs ExpressVPN (2026) — Head-to-Head
Both VPNs score 91/100 in our independent testing. They're genuinely the two best all-round VPNs in 2026 — but they're not equal in every category. ExpressVPN is faster and better for streaming. NordVPN is cheaper, has more servers, and includes built-in threat protection. The right choice depends on your priorities.

The Kape Technologies question
An important ownership consideration many comparisons skip.
ExpressVPN was acquired by Kape Technologies in 2021 for $936 million. Kape also owns Private Internet Access (PIA) and CyberGhost, making it one of the largest VPN conglomerates. Kape was formerly known as Crossrider — a company with a history in adware distribution, rebranded and pivoted to privacy tools.
ExpressVPN has maintained its no-logs policy and privacy practices since the acquisition. The KPMG audits and TrustedServer architecture remain in place. The company has operated independently under Kape ownership, and there is no evidence of policy changes that harm users.
However, the ownership question is legitimate. Buying privacy products from a company that previously distributed adware involves some degree of trust that the acquisition-era commitments hold long-term.
NordVPN is owned by Nord Security — a Panamanian company that has grown organically and is not part of any acquisition roll-up. Nord Security also owns Surfshark (merged in 2022) but both operate independently with separate infrastructure.
If corporate ownership and independence is a deciding factor for you, NordVPN has the cleaner ownership history. If you evaluate VPNs on their current policies and audited behaviour, ExpressVPN's track record stands on its own merits.
