Best VPN for Netflix 2026 — ExpressVPN

Q: Does a VPN affect streaming quality?

Connect to a nearby server in the country you want. The main risk is a VPN that throttles bandwidth, which is why free options are a poor fit for HD streaming.

Q: Is it legal to use a VPN for Netflix?

Using a VPN is legal in most countries. Netflix's terms of service technically prohibit using a VPN to access region-locked content, but the consequences are limited to Netflix terminating your stream or blocking the VPN's IP — not any legal action against you. In the UK, US, Canada, and most of Europe, using a VPN is entirely legal.

Platform breakdown

Platform notes

Netflix ExpressVPN wins

Netflix has the most aggressive VPN detection of any streaming service. It bans entire IP ranges associated with data centres and maintains a blocklist that gets updated continuously.

ExpressVPN has the highest streaming score in this comparison. NordVPN is next.

BBC iPlayer ExpressVPN + NordVPN

BBC iPlayer blocks all non-UK IP addresses and requires users to confirm they hold a valid TV licence. Any VPN connecting through a UK server can in principle unblock it — but the BBC also maintains a list of known VPN IP ranges and blocks them regularly.

BBC iPlayer needs a UK IP address. ExpressVPN and NordVPN both offer UK servers.

If BBC iPlayer is your main use case, ExpressVPN and NordVPN are the only two worth using.

Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video & HBO Max

Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max also detect VPN addresses.

Common mistake

Why Free VPNs Don't Work for Streaming

Free VPNs are a poor fit for streaming. Here's why.

Their IP addresses are already blacklisted Free VPNs reuse the same small pool of IP addresses across thousands of users. Netflix and iPlayer identify and block these IPs quickly. Premium VPNs continuously acquire new addresses and rotate them — free services can't afford to do this.
Bandwidth throttling makes HD streaming impossible Free VPN providers deliberately cap connection speeds to reduce infrastructure costs. Most free VPNs throttle to between 2–10 Mbps, which is borderline for SD streaming and completely inadequate for HD or 4K. You'll spend more time buffering than watching.
Monthly data caps cut sessions short The most generous free VPN plans offer around 10 GB per month. A single 4K Netflix episode uses approximately 7 GB. One evening of streaming exhausts a month's allowance. Premium VPNs are unlimited — and at $3–$7/month, cost less than a single month of Netflix.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Netflix block VPNs?

Yes. Netflix actively detects and blocks IP addresses associated with data centres and VPN providers. When many users share the same IP, Netflix flags it and shows a proxy error. Premium VPNs like ExpressVPN and NordVPN continuously rotate their server IPs and add new addresses to stay ahead of Netflix's blocklist. Free VPNs almost never keep up with this, which is why they consistently fail. If you see the Netflix proxy error, switching to a different server in the same country usually fixes it within seconds.

Which VPN works with Netflix UK?

Connect to a UK server, then open Netflix. ExpressVPN and NordVPN both offer UK servers. The UK catalogue includes titles that are not on Netflix US.

Can I watch BBC iPlayer outside the UK with a VPN?

BBC iPlayer requires a UK IP address. Connect to a UK server on ExpressVPN or NordVPN, then open bbc.co.uk/iplayer. You may be asked to confirm you hold a UK TV licence. That is a self-declaration, not a verification check.

Does a VPN affect streaming quality?

Connect to a nearby server in the country you want. A UK viewer using a UK server for BBC iPlayer keeps the route short. The main risk is a VPN that throttles bandwidth, which is why free options are a poor fit for HD streaming.

Is it legal to use a VPN for Netflix?

Using a VPN is legal in most countries, including the UK, US, Canada, and most of Europe. Netflix's terms of service technically prohibit using a VPN to access region-locked content, but the only consequence is Netflix terminating your stream or blocking that VPN's IP — not any legal action against you as a subscriber. Netflix does not take legal action against individual users for bypassing geoblocks. In countries where VPNs are restricted (China, Russia, UAE), the legality question is more complex, but that's about VPN use in general — not specifically for Netflix.
