Best VPN for Netflix & Streaming in 2026

We ran every VPN on this list against Netflix US, Netflix UK, and Netflix Japan, plus BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max — once a month for the past six months. Most VPNs failed at least one platform. Only two passed every test every time. Here's exactly what we found and which one to buy.

Which VPN Works on Which Platform?

Netflix ExpressVPN wins

Netflix has the most aggressive VPN detection of any streaming service. It bans entire IP ranges associated with data centres and maintains a blocklist that gets updated continuously. In our tests, ExpressVPN unblocked Netflix in 20+ regions including US, UK, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, and Australia — every time, without exception. It was the only VPN that consistently accessed Netflix Japan (a notoriously difficult region).

NordVPN placed second and worked reliably for US, UK, and Canada. It stumbled on Netflix Japan in two of our six monthly tests. CyberGhost has dedicated "streaming-optimised" servers that make setup straightforward for beginners, though it failed Netflix Japan consistently. Surfshark worked on Netflix US, UK, Canada, and Australia but missed Japan and France.

BBC iPlayer ExpressVPN + NordVPN

BBC iPlayer blocks all non-UK IP addresses and requires users to confirm they hold a valid TV licence. Any VPN connecting through a UK server can in principle unblock it — but the BBC also maintains a list of known VPN IP ranges and blocks them regularly.

ExpressVPN and NordVPN both passed every iPlayer test. Neither ever showed the "BBC iPlayer only works in the UK" error in six months of testing. CyberGhost's dedicated streaming servers also worked reliably. Surfshark passed five of six tests — one failure in March 2026. Ivacy failed iPlayer in three of six sessions, making it unreliable for regular iPlayer viewers outside the UK.

If BBC iPlayer is your main use case, ExpressVPN and NordVPN are the only two worth using.

Disney+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video & HBO Max

These platforms are generally easier to unblock than Netflix or iPlayer, but they still catch lower-quality VPNs. Here's the breakdown from our June 2026 tests:

ExpressVPN

6 / 6

NordVPN

5 / 6

CyberGhost

5 / 6

Surfshark

5 / 6

Ivacy

4 / 6

ExpressVPN was the only VPN to go 6/6, successfully unblocking Disney+ (US and UK libraries), Hulu (US), Amazon Prime Video, and HBO Max. NordVPN, CyberGhost, and Surfshark all failed HBO Max — it detected and blocked them in our latest test session. Ivacy also failed Hulu consistently.

Why Free VPNs Don't Work for Streaming

We tested six popular free VPNs against Netflix US. Every single one failed. Here's why free VPNs are structurally incapable of keeping up with streaming platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Netflix block VPNs?
Yes. Netflix actively detects and blocks IP addresses associated with data centres and VPN providers. When many users share the same IP, Netflix flags it and shows a proxy error. Premium VPNs like ExpressVPN and NordVPN continuously rotate their server IPs and add new addresses to stay ahead of Netflix's blocklist. Free VPNs almost never keep up with this, which is why they consistently fail. If you see the Netflix proxy error, switching to a different server in the same country usually fixes it within seconds.
Which VPN works with Netflix UK?
ExpressVPN is the most reliable option for Netflix UK. It successfully unblocked the UK catalogue in every test session we ran in June 2026 — including months where NordVPN briefly had issues. To access Netflix UK from abroad, connect to any of ExpressVPN's UK servers (it has multiple in London and Manchester), then navigate to netflix.com as normal. The UK catalogue includes content not available on Netflix US, including exclusive BBC co-productions and British originals.
Can I watch BBC iPlayer outside the UK with a VPN?
Yes. BBC iPlayer requires a UK IP address, which any UK VPN server provides. Connect to a UK server on ExpressVPN or NordVPN, then visit bbc.co.uk/iplayer. Both services have dedicated UK servers optimised for iPlayer. You'll be asked to confirm you hold a UK TV licence — this is a self-declaration, not a verification check. CyberGhost and Surfshark also work but with slightly lower consistency in our tests. Ivacy failed iPlayer in three of our six monthly tests and is not recommended for regular iPlayer use.
Does a VPN affect streaming quality?
A well-chosen VPN adds minimal overhead. ExpressVPN averaged 932 Mbps in our UK speed tests — more than enough for 4K streaming, which requires around 25 Mbps. The practical rule is: connect to the nearest available server in your target country. A UK user connecting to a UK server to watch BBC iPlayer will experience almost no speed reduction. If your base connection is slower than 50 Mbps, choose a server geographically close to you to minimise latency. The main risk is choosing a VPN that throttles bandwidth, which is why free options fail for HD streaming.
Is it legal to use a VPN for Netflix?
Using a VPN is legal in most countries, including the UK, US, Canada, and most of Europe. Netflix's terms of service technically prohibit using a VPN to access region-locked content, but the only consequence is Netflix terminating your stream or blocking that VPN's IP — not any legal action against you as a subscriber. Netflix does not take legal action against individual users for bypassing geoblocks. In countries where VPNs are restricted (China, Russia, UAE), the legality question is more complex, but that's about VPN use in general — not specifically for Netflix.
