What “see” means on the VPN hop
- Visible to the VPN operator as traffic: that your device used the tunnel, when the session ran, how much data moved, and which destinations the VPN server forwarded.
- Not visible as chat text, while HTTPS holds: the prompt and the reply inside the encrypted session to the AI service. The VPN is not the service that the chat is encrypted to.
- Still visible to the AI vendor: the contents of the chat, the account, and the exit address of the VPN. A VPN does not make a prompt anonymous to the model provider.
Where the comparison file helps
If the VPN company is part of the threat model, the relevant fields are privacy score, audit_type, audit_firm, and jurisdiction — the same fields as the audit and jurisdiction questions. They describe logging evidence and compel risk. They do not describe how an AI product behaves.
NordVPN is the only provider with ram_servers set true in this file (privacy 94, Deloitte, Panama). Proton VPN leads privacy at 98. Those are VPN facts from the 12 June 2026 verification. They are not ratings of any chatbot.

FAQ
Can the VPN provider read the text of an HTTPS AI chat?
Not from the HTTPS payload. The chat text is encrypted between your app and the AI service. The VPN operator can still see that the tunnel carried traffic to a destination, plus timing and volume, depending on what that operator stores.
Who still sees the prompt if you use a VPN?
The AI service you are talking to. A VPN changes your network path and can hide the destination from the local network. It does not hide the prompt from the vendor that receives it.
Does this page score AI models?
No. Best VPN Match does not rank models here. For model choice, go to https://bestaimatch.com/. This page only covers what the VPN provider can see of the traffic.
